By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 20. The District Planning Committee (DPC) has approved a Rs. 86-crore annual plan outlay as the State allocation under the People's Plan Campaign for the district.

The DPC approval covers grama-block-district panchayats, corporations and municipalities in the district.

The outlay was cleared at a meeting convened at the Collectorate by the district panchayat president, Ms. Sasikala Sivasankar.

The DPC had earlier approved project proposals submitted by the Corporation and local bodies.

The share of the allocation is Rs. 39.57 crores for grama panchayats, Rs. 10.57 crores for block panchayats, Rs. 10.13 crores for district panchayat and Rs. 25.71 crores for the Corporation and municipalities.

The highest allocation for grama panchayats in the district is for the Vamanapuram block panchayats (Rs. 86.13 lakhs). The lowest allocation of Rs. 26 lakhs has been earmarked for the Ottur grama panchayat in the Varkala block panchayat. A sum of Rs. 13.51 lakhs has also been earmarked under the tribal sub- plan.

Among block panchayats, the highest allocation of Rs. 125 lakhs has been awarded to Vamanapuram while the lowest of Rs. 30 lakhs is for the Thiruvananthapuram rural block.

The break-up for other local bodies is as follows. Varkala (Rs. 74 lakhs), Kilimanoor (Rs. 104 lakhs), Chirayinkeezhu (Rs. 87 lakhs), Vellanad (Rs. 118 lakhs), Nedumangad (Rs. 67 lakhs), Kazhakuttom (Rs. 92 lakhs), Nemom (Rs. 103 lakhs), Perunkadavila (Rs. 94 lakhs), Athiyannoor (Rs. 78 lakhs) and Parassala (Rs. 78 lakhs).

An aggregate annual Plan outlay of Rs. 10.13 crores has been approved for the district panchayats, which is the fourth highest allocation awarded in the State.

The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has been sanctioned an outlay of Rs. 20.04 crores. Among the four municipalities, the highest allocation is for Neyyatinkara (Rs. 1.90 crores) and the lowest for Attingal (Rs. 88 lakhs).

The District Collector, Mr. K.R. Jyothilal, who officiated over the meeting as DPC Secretary, noted that the proliferation of development project proposals to be undertaken by the local bodies should be discouraged to minimise projects that fail to be completed within stipulated schedules. The number of projects should be limited in accordance with their scope to ensure implementation within a time-frame.

Among those who attended the meeting were Ms. Parvathy Ammal, district planning officer, various official and unofficial members of the DPC.
