UAE snaps ties with Taliban
Manama (Bahrain), Sept. 22. The United Arab Emirates today cut
diplomatic ties with the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, asked
them to close its embassy in Abu Dhabi within 24 hours and
repatriate the staff.
U.S. planes in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Sept. 22. U.S. military aircraft have landed at a
military airport in the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan,
close to Afghanistan, an Uzbek military official requesting
anonymity told AFP today.
U.S. military might moves closer to Afghanistan
Washington, Sept. 22. The Bush administration is moving
additional military and operational hardware closer to
Afghanistan. The Defence Secretary, Mr. Donald Rumsfeld, has
signed orders for sending more support aircraft to the area.
Taliban downs spyplane, copter
Islamabad, Sept. 22. Afghanistan's ruling Taliban today said it
had downed an unmanned spy plane and a helicopter in areas where
opposition forces reported sweeping advances.
Sattar calls up Jaswant Singh
Islamabad, Sept. 22. In what appears to be an attempt to mollify
New Delhi over the remarks made by the Pakistan President, Gen.
Pervez Musharraf, three days ago, the Pakistan Foreign Minister,
Mr. Abdul Sattar, today telephoned the External Affairs Minister,
Mr. Jaswant Singh, and exchanged notes on the emerging situation
in the world after the September 11 attacks in New York and
Washington.
'We won't add to Pak.'s woes'
New Delhi, Sept. 22. India today said it was not interested in
adding to Pakistan's current difficulties and stepped up its
efforts to reach out to the world leaders.
War against terrorism includes J&K too: Powell
London, Sept. 22. The impending U.S.-led assault on terrorism
would be targeted at terrorist actions anywhere in the world,
including Jammu and Kashmir, the U.S. Secretary of State, Gen.
Colin Powell, has said.
Plan to prop up Taliban rivals
New Delhi, Sept. 22. Visualising a key role for the Taliban
opposition in a global campaign against terrorism, India, Russia
and Iran have activated their consultations on ways to bring
stability to Afghanistan.
One for BJP, one for Congress
New Delhi, Sept. 22. The BJP and the Congress today bagged one
parliamentary seat each in Rajasthan and Gujarat retaining Tonk
(SC) and Sabarkantha constituencies respectively as the Assam
Chief Minister, Mr. Tarun Gogoi, won the Titabor Assembly seat in
the by-elections held in six States on Thursday.
Russia cautions U.S. on Pak.
Moscow, Sept. 22. The Russian President, Mr. Vladimir Putin, has
cautioned Washington against bending Pakistan too hard to support
U.S. strikes in Afghanistan.
