Gogoi wins by a big margin

GUWAHATI, SEPT. 22. The Assam Congress has won hands down both the seats in the Assembly by-elections, held last Thursday. The results were declared today.

At Titabor, the Chief Minister, Mr. Tarun Gogoi, defeated his nearest rival, Mr. Hemanta Kalita of the Asom Gana Parishad, by a massive margin of 45,250 votes. Mr. Gogoi polled 55,445 votes against 10,195 polled by Mr. Kalita. The CPI and the NCP candidates lost their security deposits.

In a nine-cornered contest at Dibrugarh, Dr. Kalyan Gogoi of the Congress polled 40,675 votes. His nearest rival, Mr. Ajit Chaliha of the BJP, polled 14,714 votes. Except the NCP candidate, the others polled less than a thousand votes each.
