CM's assurance on assistance to woman SI
PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 22. The Pondicherry Chief Minister, Mr. P.
Shanmugham, told the Assembly today that he would look into the
files relating to the woman sub-inspector, Ms. Janu, who
sustained injuries when the pistol of a colleague went off
accidentally while she was on duty at the airport during the
visit of the then Vice- President. The injury had immbobilised
her for the last four years. He was replying to the plea of the
Congress member, Mr. E. Valsaray, that the woman police official
remained bed-ridden and her case should be considered on
humanitarian grounds. He said what was perplexing was that
frequent orders were issued to her to join duty. How could a
person remaining immobilised because of paralytic situation join
duty?
The Leader in the Opposition, Mr. R. V. Janakiraman, the DMK
legislator, Mr. S. P. Sivakumar, and members belonging to the
ruling and Opposition blocs made out a strong case that the
official be sanctioned immediate relief. Mr. Sivakumar wanted
that atleast Rs. 50,000 be announced immediately from out of the
Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
Mr. Shanmugham said he would announce the decision in a month's
time after looking into the files. ``I have full sympathy for the
suffering official,'' he said.
