Sunderbans finds place in UNESCO reserve list
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 24. The Gulf of Mannar and the Sunderbans
mangrove have been added to the UNESCO's World Network of
Biosphere Reserves. Last year, the Nilgiris was included in the
list.
Launched in 1976, the network programme aims at testing and
demonstrating strategies for achieving a balance between the
conflicting needs of conservation of biological reserves and
economic development of the areas in and around them. In all, 411
reserves in 94 countries are part of the network.
