Pak. waiting for U.S. 'goodies bag'
By Sridhar Krishnaswami
WASHINGTON, SEPT. 24. After the visit of the National Security
Adviser, Mr. Brajesh Mishra, the External Affairs Minister, Mr.
Jaswant Singh, will be arriving here next month. There is
tremendous support and sympathy for Pakistan in the light of the
decisions taken by its President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, to
support the U.S. wholeheartedly in its war against terrorism.
As for Pakistan, the question is not merely the lifting of U.S.
sanctions. Rather, it is in the larger ``goodies bag'' that most
certainly is coming up. As it is, there is disappointment in the
official Pakistan establishment here that Mr. Bush has not gone
the whole hog.
That democracy-related measures as far as Pakistan is concerned
have a heavy Congressional dimension is something to be taken
note of.
