Somak Palit champion

KOLKATA, SEPT. 24. Second-seeded Somak Palit emerged champion in the 14th The Telegraph schools' chess championship at the Gorky Sadan here on Monday.

Somak and top-seeded Saptarshi Roy scored 9.5 points each, but Somak was placed first on progressive score.

Today Somak beat Supriya Maji in a centre counter defence. Supriya sacrificed a pawn in the opening but had little compensation for it. Somak won two more pawns in the endgame forcing Supriya to resign.

Saptarshi was lucky to win from an inferior position against Joydeep Dutta in an irregular opening. Joydeep had a clear advantage from the opening but blundered a rook under time pressure and lost.

Debayan Majumdar defeated Abhishek Das of Jamshedpur in a long game in the Winawer variation of the French defence. With the victory, Debayan took his tally to nine points and was placed third.

Majumdar (9); Swagatam Sengupta (7.5) lost to Tanmoy Pattanayak (8.5); Mary Ann Gomes (8.5) bt Suman Basu (7.5); Ayan Lahiri (8) bt Sourav Bose (7.5); Samput Mallick (7.5) drew with Najir Arifin (7.5); Priya Ratnam (7) lost to Soumya Thakurta (8); Chiranjit Saha (7) lost to Nishikant Mishra (8); Abhijit Kar (7) lost to Debaditta S. Biswas (8).
