Andhra, Tamil Nadu are champions

PANAJI, SEPT. 24. Andhra Pradesh retained the South Zone championship for the third year in succession in the men's event, while Tamil Nadu emerged champion in the women's event, which concluded here at Campal indoor stadium on Monday.

Host Goa's men's team and AP's women's teams had to be content with the runner-up positions. AP won six golds, while Goa won two golds followed by Tamil Nadu and Kerala with one each. In the women's event, Tamil Nadu won four golds followed by AP with two and Karnataka with one.

AP's six gold medallists were S. Raju (light fly), V. Durga Rao (fly), H. Raju (Banton), Srikath P (light), E. Ranjeeth (welter), M. Narashimham (heavy). Goa's Santosh Birmole (feather) and Premanand Goakar (middle) bagged gold, while Tamil Nadu's V. Lenish Varughese (light welter) and Kerala's P. Murali Kishore (light middle) were the other gold medallists.

H. Raju of AP was adjudged the best boxer of the tournament, while Nilesh Kanolkar of Goa was the best loser in the men's event.
