THE CHAIRMAN, Prof. V. G. Anandani, says the number of artists in Karnataka is growing every year, thanks to the subject being taught in many university institutions. Some of these new artists have not only brought credit to the state but have managed to earn a name abroad also.

The Karnataka Lalith Kala Academy has now brought out a "Who's who'' of these artists. An earlier book had taken notice of artists till about 1983 and the present book contains details about subsequent artists.

Some criteria for inclusion in this "Who's who" had been followed like Academy award winners, participation in at least two exhibitions organised by the Academy, winners of national or state awards etc. With all that, it is still anybody's guess how many deserving artists got excluded, and how at least some have got included in the book.

At least one painting of each of the artists is reproduced. There are many pleasing ones here, a pious man and a goat (p 141, Sankara Gowda Bettadon), portrait of a contented lady (p 173, Bk. Hubli), Woman singing, with a tambura (p 157, R. Sitharam). Compare this with some geometrical figure of a person with a tambura (p 165, Sulochana Venugopal), the Mahatma and a dove (p 16, Eashwar PAB). The brief sketches about the artists are in Kannada and English. The book is bound to be useful.
