Heavy rain in Tumkur Dt.: toll three

TUMKUR, SEPT. 25. The toll in heavy rain has risen to three in Tumkur District. Over 125 houses, including 40 in the city, have reportedly collapsed and 200 houses partially damaged in the rain. Loss of cattle, property, and crops, and damage to roads, tank bunds, bridges and public buildings were reported from several taluks.

The district received a record rainfall of 290.7 mm in the past nine days. It was feared that rainfall would continue for three more days. The highest rainfall was recorded in Madhugiri taluk, where scores of houses collapsed. The Mallenahalli tank breached, causing extensive damage to paddy crop in its 300-acre achkat. A bridge at Ganjalakunte was washed away. A boulder, which was dislodged from the Madhugiri hillock, slid down into the premises of a hostel.

Several colonies in Madhugiri town, including the Nrupatunga Circle on the main road, and at least eight villages surrounding it were inundated. The Jayamangali and the Kumadvati are in spate. About 25 irrigation tanks are reportedly overflowing.

Ramakka (80) and Chikkarangamma (60) died when the wall of their house collapsed in Chikkathotlukere on Monday. A man died in Irakasandra in a rain mishap a day earlier.

The KSRTC bus stand on Ashoka Road, Shirani Road, Balankatte, where a shop collapsed, and Yajamanara Beedhi were inundated, disrupting life. The officials of the Revenue Department took steps to accommodate the affected people in school buildings. The municipal staff were clearing drains and the officials of the Minor Irrigation Department were repairing tank bunds. The Akka Thangi Tank is overflowing and the Kesaramadu Tank was on the verge of breaching.

The breaching of the Hemavathy Tumkur canal at Rangayyan Palya resulted in the submersion of 40 acres of areca plantation, 30 acres of paddy fields and five acres of chilly plantation. The fields are deposited with four to five feet of silt, rendering it difficult for the farmers revive them.
