Rain intensity decreases
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 25. Though the intensity of the rain
has decreased, six more relief camps were opened in the district
today taking the total number of camps to 17. About 3,300 persons
in 867 families have been moved to the camps.
Crops worth Rs.1.50 crores were damaged in Thiruvananthapuram and
Neyyatinkara taluks. Ninety-two houses were damaged totally and
1,344 others partially causing an estimated loss of Rs.22,80,000.
As many as 40 pumps have been used to drain out storm water from
the low-lying areas in the district. The water level in the low-
lying areas which were inundated following the past three days'
rain went up as water from the elevated areas flowed to these
places.
The district administration has made arrangements to supply food
and medicine in the relief camps. A medical team led by the
District Medical Officer visited the camps. Tow relief camps have
been opened in Balanagar and one each in Karumamom Lakshamveedu
colony, behind the Al Arif Hospital in Kadakampally and the
Panchayat Community Hall at Edavathottumukhom in Chirayinkeezh.
Three Deputy Collectors have been given the charge of Manacaud,
Muttathara and Kadakampally villages which have seen the worst
ravages of the rain as per the directive of the District
Collector, Mr.K.R.Jyothilal. They would ensure the smooth supply
of food and medicine in the relief camps in the villages.
The Mayor, Prof.J.Chandra, has visited all the relief camps and
flood-affected areas in the city. She visited Bangladesh colony,
Priyadarsini Nagar Madrassa Hall, Kamaleswaram High School,
Ponnara Sreedhar Memorial School, and Karikkakom School.
