Vengaboys show today
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, SEPT. 25. The show is on. Vengaboys would be
performing at the Treasure Island on Wednesday night following a
directive from the court, which suspended the Ranga Reddy
Superintendent of Police's order cancelling the show.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Mr. Venkat Vardhan of DNA
Networks, event management group, and Mr. Prasad Reddy of
Treasure Island said the court had given permission for the show
to go on and also asked the police to provide adequate security.
The show will start at 7.30 p.m. and the Vengaboys would join the
crowd at 10 '0 clock.
They said ``nudity'', which supposedly led to the present
predicament, was unfounded. ``Ten or 20 people can't decide what
Indian culture is and how this show is obscene,'' they said
referring to the organisations which had protested. The group had
performed in various cities without any hindrance and the
arguments put up by some organisations were absolutely
ridiculous, they felt.
However, they felt the biggest loser in the present crisis was
the image of the city as artistes would think twice before coming
here. It would have direct effect on tourism being promoted in a
big way by the Government. Mr. Venkat was surprised that he had
to learn the news of cancellation from the media. The officials
did not even inform us, he said.
``On the one hand the Government sends us in delegations along
with Ministers to foreign countries to promote tourism and on the
other hand we get this kind of treatment when we bring popular
bands,'' Mr. Venkat said.
He said the organisers of Hyderabad Shopping Festival, to be held
next month, had approached them for 20 days live entertainment.
``If these kind of obstacles are created, who would like to come
here,'' he asked.
Mr. Venkat said he would like to meet the authorities and put the
things in perspective and he was hopeful that they would
understand his views. Mr. Prasad Reddy ruled out any possibility
of rival brands and rival clubs having a role in this episode.
