Arming the other faction
Sir, - The U.S. policy of `My enemy's enemy is my friend'
resulted in the creation of Osama bin Laden's terrorist group.
Had the U.S. not provided Osama with arms to fight Soviet
occupation, he could not have expanded his network. I am afraid
the international community is committing a similar mistake by
providing arms to the Northern Alliance, which is fighting the
Taliban in Afghanistan.
These fundamentalist groups, whether the Northern Alliance or the
Taliban, wage war to further their ideologies and to capture
power, not to serve the people. I am not against taking logistics
help from the Northern Alliance to crush the Taliban but
supplying them arms may prove dangerous in the future.
