RPG Cellular to offer value-added services

CHENNAI, SEPT. 25. RPG Cellular plans to offer innovative value- added services based on short messaging services (SMS). Data- based information on day-to-day events, mobile banking and ticketing are among the services it is proposing to offer, according to Mr. D. R. Mehta, Managing Director.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Mehta said revenue generating messages for the company were about 30,000 a day.

The company was charging Rs. 1.50 per outgoing message. Value- added services were expected to account for 5 per cent of its revenue, said SMS had been gaining currency among its clientele.

Mr. Mehta said the company had a subscriber base of about 93,000. Of this, 55 per cent comprised pre-paid segment and the remaining post-paid.

To a question, he said the company had been earning a monthly cash profit of Rs. 2.50 crores and a net profit of Rs. 1.50 crores.

The company, he said, was in an expansion mode. Of the total planned investment of Rs. 85 crores, it had already spent about Rs. 50 crores. The balance was being spent in the second phase which had already begun.

Mr. M. Padmanaban, vice-president (marketing), said the company was offering a new post-paid tariff plan, `CallMe', which provided free incoming calls.
