Label for non-vegetarian food articles

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 26. The Union Health Ministry has issued a notification which requires food articles containing non- vegetarian ingredients to carry a distinct label. The coverage of the edict includes food articles that contain egg.

The label would be in the form of a brown filled circle inside a square. It would have to be in close proximity to the name or the brandname of the product. The new regimen would also apply to advertisements, besides the actual product.

The Ministry also announced a proposal to make it mandatory for producers of beverages and soft drinks to print the date of manufacturer and the `best before' date on the bottle itself, instead of on the cap.
