10 scientists chosen for Bhatnagar awards

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 26. Ten scientists, including five from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore, have been selected for the CSIR's prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards for the current year. The names of the winners were announced today on the occasion of the CSIR's Foundation Day. The winners include Dr. Amitabha Chattopadhyay of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, and Dr. Umesh Varshney of IISc. for biological sciences, and Dr. T.K.Chandrasekhar of IIT Kanpur and Dr. Uday Maitra of IISc. for chemical sciences.

The other winners are: Dr. Kolluru Sree Krishna of the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, and Dr. Prashant Goswami of CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation, Bangalore (earth, atmosphere, ocean and planetary sciences), Dr. Gadadhar Misra of IISc. and Dr. T.N.Venkataramana of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai (mathematical sciences), Dr. Birendra Nath Mallick of JNU (medical sciences) and Dr. Rahul Pandit of IISc. (physical sciences).

Announcing the winners at a function to mark the day, Dr. R.A.Mashelkar, Director General, CSIR, said no award was being given this year for the engineering sciences category.

On the occasion, Mr.Bachi Singh Rawat, Minister of State for Science and Technology, gave away the young scientists award, the technology awards, the Dr. I.C. Chopra Memorial awards and the Shyama Prasada Mukherjee fellowships.
