Left parties denounce U.S. moves
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, SEPT. 26. Nine Left parties in Andhra Pradesh have
decided to hold a series of meetings and demonstrations
throughout the State in the coming week to denounce the US move
to attack Afghanistan.
They said military action by the US, in the absence of a formal
resolution by the UN General Assembly, would amount to an
atrocity against innocent people. These parties will distribute
lakhs of pamphlets to expose the US and the NDA Government's
unsolicited support to these actions.
Addressing a press conference here today, Messrs. B. V. Raghavulu
(CPI-M), S. Sudhakar Reddi (CPI), M. Omkar (MCPI), Mr. B. N.
Reddi (CPM) and others said the terrorist attacks on the World
Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington using
planes full of passengers were highly reprehensible. But, such
attacks were the outcome of US foreign policies in the past of
providing arms and training to the likes of Taliban and Osama bin
Laden whom it was now trying to eliminate.
The Left leaders accused the US of pursuing a dual policy of
fighting terrorism directed against itself but turning a blind
eye to frequent attacks by Israelis against the Palestinians and
their leaders. It had blocked every resolution in the UN Security
Council which sought to restrain Israel.
Describing the NDA Government as `spineless,' they said the NDA
leaders had adopted a slavish approach towards the US by offering
Indian air bases to launch attacks on Afghanistan though
unsolicited. The External Affairs Minister, Mr. Jaswant Singh,
had gone to the extent of describing the President. Mr. Bush, as
a statesman while the National Security Advisor, Mr. Brajesh
Mishra, was bowing before the US leaders.
The Communist leaders also criticised the ruling Telugu Desam
Party (TDP), which is extending outside support to the NDA
Government, for remaining silent on the `war-mongering' by the
United States of America.
