Town Hall Jn. flyover to have four lanes

By Govind D.Belgaumkar

BANGALORE, SEPT. 26. The flyover planned at the Town Hall Junction will have four lanes. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) expects that the flyover will decongest traffic at the junction.

According to Mr. S.Rajamohan, Chief Engineer (Infrastructure), BMP, the 706-metre-long flyover will help smooth vehicular movement through the junction. The vehicles to K.R.Market can take the flyover, and those coming on J.C.Road from Minerva Circle side can use the road beneath it. The traffic signals at the junction will be removed when the flyover is commissioned.

Mr. Rajamohan says the four-lane N.R.Road will be widened to six lanes to ensure that the vehicles that come from J.C.Road and S.J.Park Road to the junction are not held up.

The flyover has been designed for one-way traffic. The ramp will start near the BMP building and end at the Kamath Hotel. There will be adequate space between the Sirsi Circle flyover and the hotel. This will provide adequate space for motorists to take the required lane to the Sirsi Circle flyover or to the K.R.Market.

Estimated to cost about Rs. 20 crores, the work on the project will be awarded through tender, which has already been invited. The contractor will have to design the flyover on his own. ``The BMP has given a broad outline of the design,'' Mr. Rajamohan says. The work should be completed in 18 months.

He says the BMP is planning at least two pedestrian sub-ways -- at the Town Hall junction and near the Ulsoor Gate Police Station -- for the flyover. Separate tenders will be invited for these projects. Installation of a modern signalling system is being considered for pedestrian crossing under the flyover.
