America's wrong policies
Sir, - The whole purpose of Prof Bernard Haykel's article seems
to focus on just one point: ostracising Osama bin Laden from the
Muslim community. It is unfortunate that being a Professor of
Islamic Law he becomes hostage to the American propaganda of
demonising Osama bin Laden. He appeals to the U.S. and Muslims
all over the world to unite and deny Osama a symbolic victory.
On the other hand, he admits that America's foreign policy
towards Iraq, Iran and Israel/Palestine and its complicit policy
of supporting corrupt and authoritarian regimes all over the
Muslim world are wrong.
Whether Muslims worldwide support Osama and whether the attack on
the twin towers is legitimate under Islamic law are questions of
secondary concern. The primary question is: why take Muslims as
hostages to the whole episode?
Zawahir Siddique,
