Not the remedy
Sir, - Mr. V. Ramanathan's article on caste, and race theories
and their practice in the various parts of the world (Open Page,
Sept. 25) was brilliant. It has been one of the sterling virtues
of Hindu religion that criticism of its tenets has never been
considered a threat calling for a ban on the expression of such
views or for waging a war.
Hindu religion is an open book with multiple interpretations. The
Durban conference should be taken in the same spirit.
But I have reservations on the points suggested by Mr.
Ramanathan. Governmental intervention by purchasing land and
selling it to BPL Dalits or by reserving police posts for them
will create new areas of conflict among the rural rich and the
rural poor.
In this scheme of things what is the objective? Do we take it for
granted that only poor Dalits need Governmental intervention and
the poor of other sects or creeds should be left to their fate?
J.M. Ovasdi,
