Air guns found in Jet Airways parcel
By Gargi Parsai
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 27. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS)
here has ordered an inquiry into the discovery of a parcel today
containing an air pistol and air gun flown as cargo on Jet
Airways flight 9W-842 from Kolkata to Chennai last night on way
to Port Blair.
The parcel was reportedly posted by the Kolkata Postal Department
for a trader in Port Blair. It came in the cargo hold and was
kept at the Chennai airport for the mandatory cooling off period,
when the airline staff discovered the contents of the parcel
during a routine check and brought it to the notice of the local
police. Apparently, no licence is required for the kind of air
guns found in the parcel.
Not taking any chances during the atmosphere of high threat
perceptions, the BCAS chief, Mr. Veerana Aivally, has ordered an
inquiry. Security agencies have to ascertain this mode of
transportation was not a trial run for anything sinister and how
the parcel passed through at Kolkata.
A Jet Airways spokesman said the parcel was brought to the notice
of the authorities by the airline staff.
