PM asks U.P. CM to order probe into firing
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 27. The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari
Vajpayee, tonight spoke to the U.P. Chief Minister, Mr. Rajnath
Singh, and asked him to order a high-level inquiry into the
``unfortunate'' police firing on violent demonstrators in Lucknow
in which three persons were killed.
Mr. Vajpayee condemned the violence which erupted in some parts
of Lucknow following the ban imposed on the Students Islamic
Movement of India (SIMI) and arrest of some of its activists and
appealed to the people to maintain communal harmony, the PMO
sources said.
Describing the killings in the police firing as ``unfortunate'',
Mr. Vajpayee said ``at a time when the country needs to
demonstrate unity and communal harmony in its fight against
global terrorism, such incidents should not happen in any part of
the country.''
