7 SIMI members held following Centre's ban
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, SEPT. 27. Seven members of the Students Islamic
Movement of India, including its city president, Athar Qureshi,
and the secretary, Muqeemuddin Yasir, were picked up by the
police on Thursday following a ban imposed on the organisation by
the Centre.
The police reportedly received wind of the possible ban on the
organisation last night and subsequently arrested the activists.
The police are also maintaining a surveillance on several other
members.
Police sources said the SIMI had a network of 100 activists in
the State, of which nearly 70 were reportedly working in the twin
cities. Two criminal cases -- one under Mirchowk police station
limits in November 1998 and another under Santoshnagar police
station limits in December 2000 -- were registered against the
movement.
The cases were booked against the organisation for pasting
objectionable posters and inciting communal violence. Members of
the SIMI were also involved in two other criminal cases.
The other activists taken into custody were the former city
president, Jawed Amin, the former city secretary, Ahmed, besides
Ajar Qureshi, Muttasin and Fasi.
