Call for creating awareness on glaucoma

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 28. The need for inculcating value-based
education among the younger generation was stressed by Swami
Paramarthananda of the Ramakrishna Math here on Friday.
Inaugurating the silver jubilee conference of the Andhra Pradesh
State Ophthalmological Society (APSOS), the Swamiji said most of
the education imparted now was information-oriented and not
inspirational as it used to be earlier. There was need for a
shift in favour of inculcating values.
Addressing the ophthalmologists, who came from different parts of
the country and abroad, he said: ``While you perform surgery on
the eye, we do the same, spiritually, on the `I', the ego of man.
While you restore the physical vision, we make him see his inner
self.''
Dr. Gangadhar Reddy, former Superintendent of the Sarojini Devi
Eye Hospital, who was installed as president of the APSOS, called
for steps for creating awareness about glaucoma.
Several senior ophthalmologists were honoured by the Swamiji. Dr.
Subhash Haldipurkar, Dr. G. Chandrasekhar and Dr. J. V. Ramana
were presented the three oration awards. Those who received the
humanitarian awards included Dr. P. Siva Reddy, eminent eye
surgeon, Dr. S. S. Badrinath, chairman of Shankar Nethralaya,
Chennai, Dr. J. Agarwal of the Agarwals Eye Institute, Chennai,
Dr. S. Chandrasekhara Shetty, Vice- Chancellor, RGUHS, Bangalore,
Dr. K. Anandakannan, Vice- Chancellor, MGR Medical University,
Chennai, Dr. Tony Fernandez from Angamally, Kerala, Dr. K. Vengal
Rao, former eye surgeon of General Hospital, Guntur, Dr. G.N.
Rao, Chairman, LV Prasad Eye Institute and Dr. P. Ranga Reddy,
former Superintendent, S.D. Eye Hospital.
The Life Achievement awards were received by Dr. S.S. Prasad,
Dr. K.V. Kameswara Rao, Dr. R. Hanumanth Reddy, Dr. C. Srirama
Murthy, Dr. N. Subramanya Reddy and Dr. Ahi Krishna, immediate
past president of APSOS. Dr. Siva Reddy welcomed the gathering.
Dr. Ravi Kumar Reddy, secretary of the APSOS, read out the annual
report. Dr. Saibaba Goud, Superintendent, S.D. Eye Hospital and
Dr. Pradeep Swaroop, eye surgeon, were present.
