Violence: 31 SFI activists held

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 28. The Cantonment police today arrested 31 SFI activists, including University College Union office-bearers and SFI district committee members, on charges of public property destruction, unlawful assembly and violation of the Explosives Act.

Police said the accused were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.

ASI attacked

An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police was injured in an attack allegedly by CPI(M) workers at the General Hospital here today.

According to the police, the police squad which was on duty at the hospital was attacked allegedly by some CPI(M) workers who were returning after taking part in a demonstration in front of the Secretariat protesting against the "police action" on the University College campus on Thursday. The ASI, Mr. Narayanan Nair, who was injured in the attack, was admitted to the General Hospital. A case has been registered.

DCC plea

The DCC president, Mr. N. Peethambara Kurup, has said the violent incidents at the University College here on Thursday have exposed the true colours of the CPI(M). He demanded that the Government bring to book the culprits behind the violent incidents.

Mr. Kurup said in a statement here today that the system of saluting the Marxists still prevails. It is time to put an end to the practice. The CPI(M) which has lost power is in a frenzy. The attack on CPI workers and their national leaders who were sitting on a dharna before the Secretariat is condemnable, he said.

The violence that followed the assault on the CPI workers is enough proof for the role played by the CPI(M) in the incidents. The abuse hurled by senior CPI(M) leaders on the college principal is condemnable. It has surpassed the limits of decency, Mr. Kurup said.

The CPI(M) has lost all its values. Those at the helm of affairs, who are expected to control the workers, have lost their sense, he added.
