Hotels at Kovalamto remain closed for two days

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEP. 28. The Kovalam unit of the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHRA) has decided to close down all hotels and restaurants in the beach resort for two days from September 29.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the association held in Kovalam today in protest against the police action against hoteliers in the name of confiscating beer.

Over 60 hotels and restaurants function in the international beach resort. The association, in a release here today, alleged that despite the law allowing a foreigner to keep 4.5 litres of beer, the police are taking action against hoteliers who keep the beer given to them by the tourists for chilling in the restaurants.

"The police action will only result in driving away the small number of foreign tourists who have arrived in the resort, which is facing crisis in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the U.S.," the association president Mr. G. Sudhiesh Kumar, said.

The KHRA, Kashmir Merchants Association and the Vyapari Vyvasayi Ekopana Samithi unanimously decided to indefinitely close down the restaurants and hotels in the beach resort if the authorities fail to come out with a solution immediately.
