Ban on carrying bags into Tirumala temple

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI, SEPT. 30. As part of the security measures in the hill temple of Lord Venkateswara, following the terrorist attacks in the U.S. on September 11, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams today imposed a ban on carrying suitcases and plastic bags into the temple.

Pilgrims would be asked to leave their luggage either in their rooms or in the cloakrooms before entering the shrine. Handbags and wallets would be scanned at `Mahadwaram', the main entrance to the sprawling complex. The ban comes in the wake of a red alert reportedly sounded by the Intelligence Bureau that security in and around the temple complex be tightened to preempt any terrorist attack.

Meanwhile the TTD's Executive Officer, Mr. P. Krishnaiah, has appealed to the pilgrims visiting the hill temple to cooperate with the security staff.
