Harkat to continue activities in Kashmir

ISLAMABAD, SEPT. 30. The Pakistan-based militant outfit, Harkat- ul- Mujahideen, the offices of which were shut down on Saturday, said today that it would continue its activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Harkat chief, Maulana Muhammad Sajjad Shahid, said his outfit would resist all attempts to undermine the efforts of the ``jehadi'' groups, the Pakistan news agency, NNI, said. Dismissing reports that the Harkat had been closed down by the Pakistani authorities, he said the outfit had moved its head office. It had planned to shift its office well before Washington began its war on terrorism in response to the September 11 attacks. (Pakistan closed down seven offices of the group across the country yesterday and several of its key leaders went into hiding).

Mr. Shahid also said the outfit would resist moves to dub it a terrorist organisation and asked the U.S. to stop interfering in its affairs.

In another development, Bahrain ordered the freezing of the accounts of individuals and groups suspected of financing terrorist activities, a report from Manama said.

According to the BNA news agency, in the Cabinet's weekly meeting, the Bahrain Prime Minister, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Salman al-Khalifa, ordered the Bahrain monetary agency (Central Bank) to ``take all necessary measures, in compliance with international legitimacy, to freeze the money of any individual or organisation linked to suspicious activities.''

The move is a ``part of international efforts to crack down on financial support for terrorism,'' the BNA quoted the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Mr. Mohammad Ibrahim al- Mutawa, as saying.

The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on Friday asking the member States to crack down on supporters of terrorist groups.
