Heavy rain lashes State, traffic hit

VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 30. The well-marked low-pressure area of Saturday over the west-central Bay of Bengal moved inland and now lies over Telangana and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh, according to the Cyclone Warning Centre, here on Sunday.

Under its influence rain or thundershowers are likely to continue at many places along with heavy falls at one or two places over coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 24 hours.

Chief amounts of rainfall recorded (in centimetres) along the coastal areas of the State during the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Sunday were as follows: Kakinada, Paleru bridge - 15; Dolphin's Nose (Vizag) - 14; Bapatla, Mudenepalli - 12; Waltair - 11; Visakhapatnam Airport - 10; Dowlaiswaram, Rajahmundry - 9; Narsapur - 8; Anakapalle, Kaikalur, Tadepalligudem, Tuni - 7; Gannavaram - 6; Nandigama and S. Kota - 5 each; Eturu Nagaram, Icchapuram, Koida, Madhira, Nagarjunasagar dam, Nuzivid, Srisailam 4 each.

A report from Guntur said one person was reportedly washed away in the gushing waters of Golivagu near Rentichintala on Sunday.

Following rise in water levels in many rivulets flowing across the district, traffic came to a grinding halt in most parts of Palnadu region.

Passengers coming from Hyderabad towards Guntur district were stranded at Macherla as the Chandravanka rivulet was flowing almost five feet above the road level.

Traffic also got stopped on either side of the Naguleru bridge at Dachapally and Karampudi. Road connection was cut off between Vemavaram and Regulagadda-Chennayapalam-Velampally in Machavaram mandal due to flash floods in Chakirevu. Police forces were deployed at all vulnerable bridges across rivulets for rescue operations.

There was widespread rain in Khammam district.

In Karimnagar district, rain in upland areas brought relief to farmers. Heavy rain lashed Sircilla and Karimnagar divisions. In East Godavari district, copious rain brought cheer to upland area farmers.

Low-lying areas like Jagannadhapuram in Kakinada and Aryapuram in Rajahmandry were waterlogged and traffic was disrupted in the Konaseema area.

Hyderabad and its suburbs also experienced heavy rain.

Forecast for Monday: Moderate to heavy rain is likely at most places in Telangana and in Anantapur and Kurnool districts. Light moderate rain likely in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema.

According to the Relief Commissioner, Mr. D. C. Rosaiah, the rain brought great relief to drought-affected areas.
