They are friends in Theni
By Our Staff Reporter
THENI, SEPT. 30. While State-level leaders of the AIADMK and the
CPI(M) have locked horns over seat-sharing for local bodies
polls, the CPI(M) Theni unit has almost finalised the process
with its allies including the AIADMK in several areas.
In some places, the two parties have even concluded seat-sharing
and were waiting for green signal from high command. Mr. K.
Rajappan, district secretary of the CPI(M), said that as a
precautionary measure, almost all candidates had filed
nominations in areas considered party strongholds. Only a few
candidates were yet to file papers.
The party has fielded candidates for Cumbum municipal chairman,
40 councillors in five municipalities, Andipatti district ward
member, town panchayat presidents in Palanichettipatti,
Veerapandi, Kombai, Pannaipuram, Highwayswish and Odaipatti, 15
panchayat union councillors and 10 village panchayat presidents.
Sources said though the AIADMK had fielded Mr. Rajamani for
Cumbum municipal chairman, the CPI(M) too had fielded Mr Nainar
for the post. Despite strenuous efforts by
Mr. O. Ramachandran, Cumbum MLA, they could not come to any
conclusion so far.
To avoid inner conflicts, the DMK has allotted the Cumbum
chairman post to the BJP. The MDMK too is in the fray.
Despite the deadlock over Cumbum, both the AIADMK and the CPI(M)
have concluded a deal in many town panchayats and village
panchayats.
In Pudupatti town panchayat, the CPI(M) sacrificed the president
post for the AIADMK in exchange for two councillor posts. The TMC
was satisfied with four and the AIADMK retained the rest. Similar
pacts have been reached in many village panchayats also.
Even district-level leaders also have almost finalised their
seats. The AIADMK and the CPI(M) were ready to sacrifice some of
their prospective areas for each other.
Decision on seats in several village panchayats and town
panchayats in Cumbum and Bodi has been left to the leaders of
respective areas. Both the parties have finalised seats in
Chinnamarudupatti town panchayat also.
