TADA detenu on campaign trail

TIRUNELVELI, SEPT. 30. Khaja Nizamudeen (27) of Melapalayam, a TADA detenu in the Chennai Central Prison, who is contesting the poll to the ward number 37 of the Tirunelveli Corporation, canvassed votes amid tight police security on Sunday.

The metropolitan magistrate court, Egmore, had accorded him permission to undertake the campaigning for two days from today.

Khaja Nizamudeen was one of the accused in the Chennai RSS office bomb blast case in 1993. He was absconding since then. Arrested him in 1999, he was booked under the TADA and lodged in the Chennai Central Prison. Getting special permission from the magistrate court, he filed his nomination for the ward No. 37 in Melapalayam unit of the Tirunelveli Corporation on September 24.

Nizamudeen again approached the court, seeking permission for campaigning. The court gave the nod for campaigning under police security for two days. He undertook a door-to-door canvassing in his ward from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. He spoke to the residents and sought support for his candidature.

Later, he was taken to the Palayamkottai Central Prison as per court order. He is expected to continue the campaigning on Monday and will be taken to Chennai prison later.
