TADA detenu on campaign trail
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI, SEPT. 30. Khaja Nizamudeen (27) of Melapalayam, a
TADA detenu in the Chennai Central Prison, who is contesting the
poll to the ward number 37 of the Tirunelveli Corporation,
canvassed votes amid tight police security on Sunday.
The metropolitan magistrate court, Egmore, had accorded him
permission to undertake the campaigning for two days from today.
Khaja Nizamudeen was one of the accused in the Chennai RSS office
bomb blast case in 1993. He was absconding since then. Arrested
him in 1999, he was booked under the TADA and lodged in the
Chennai Central Prison. Getting special permission from the
magistrate court, he filed his nomination for the ward No. 37 in
Melapalayam unit of the Tirunelveli Corporation on September 24.
Nizamudeen again approached the court, seeking permission for
campaigning. The court gave the nod for campaigning under police
security for two days. He undertook a door-to-door canvassing in
his ward from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. He spoke to the residents and
sought support for his candidature.
Later, he was taken to the Palayamkottai Central Prison as per
court order. He is expected to continue the campaigning on Monday
and will be taken to Chennai prison later.
