Rapid action force for forest protection
By Our Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 30. The Forest Minister, Mr. K.
Sudhakaran, announced here on Sunday that the Government would
form a rapid action force for the protection of the forests.
In a message issued in connection with the observance of Wildlife
Week, the Minister said the force would be equipped with modern
weapons.
Modern facilities, he said, would be set up to fight forest
fires. A scheme would be drawn up to prevent encroachments with
public participation.
Tourism projects, he said, would be carried out in forest areas
without affecting the environment. There was considerable
potential for such projects.
The department, he said, had taken steps to form an additional
tiger reserve for protection of the biodiversity with
Parambikulam, Chinnar and Eravikulam and nearby areas in its
purview.
Mr. Sudhakaran said that insurance cover for crops, likely to be
damaged by wild animals, was under consideration of the
Government. Barriers and electric fences would be constructed to
keep animals away from farm lands.
