Thrissur takes overall title

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 30. Thrissur dethroned defending champion Thiruvananthapuram to win the overall title in the 49th State senior aquatic championship at the Water Works swimming pool here on Sunday.

Thrissur, on the strength of its women's team which won the team championship, tallied 288 points against Thiruvananthapuram's 218 to wrest the title.

Three records were set on the final day and two of them were by K. Rajeev of Kollam, who emerged as the fastest swimmer of the meet. The 18-year-old plus two student of Sports division Pirappancode capitalised on his good start and finished strongly to break I.C. Raju's five year old record (0:25.20) in the 50m freestyle event. Rajeev clocked 0:25.20 to win the gold.

In the morning, Rajeev set a new mark in 100m butterfly (1:01.65) to better Manoj Sebastian's old mark of 1:01.99 set in 1996.

Soumy Cyriac hogged the limelight in the women's section when she sank the existing record in the 50m freestyle heats. Soni clocked 0:30.13 to break her sister Sumy Cyriac's mark (0:30.30) set in 1996. However, Soumy could not improve her record in the final as she could only manage 0:30.47 seconds while winning the gold.

Railways edged out CISF 10-9 in a thrilling men's waterpolo final which was decided by a golden goal. The two teams were level at the end of regular time and extra time too failed to produce a result. K. Binu Kumar finally scored the goal that mattered for Railways. Wayand had no trouble in beating host Thiruvananthapuram 10-2 to win the women's waterpolo title.
