Musical tribute by maestros
TAKING INDIAN classical arts to school and college students. This
has been the major objective of SPICMACAY (Society for Promotion
of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth).
In pursuit of this goal, the organisation regularly conducts Lec-
Dem (lecture-demonstration) series, which provide the scope for
informal interaction between artistes and students, helping to
create and fine-tune a future audience.
This time, a number of events have been lined up, starting from
October 1 to 16, and they are dedicated to Mother Teresa.
The programmes are going to be held in Coimbatore, Udumalpet,
Kodaikanal, Dindigul and Tiruchi, apart from Chennai.
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Chinmaya International Residential
School in Coimbatore, Bhavan's Gandhi Vidyashram in Kodaikanal,
Regional Engineering College (REC) and Alpha Plus Higher
Secondary School in Tiruchi, and Sankara Senior Secondary School
and Women's Christian College (WCC) will be among the places
where the annual series will take place.
N. Ramani, veteran musician, will present all his programmes in
Coimbatore and Udumalpet during October 1 to 3. T.V.
Sankaranarayanan, vocalist, will go from Kodaikanal to Dindigul
to Tiruchi for the interaction sessions (October 12 to 14).
The programme of the Bharatanatyam exponents, Dhananjayans, will
be at Sankara School in Adyar on October 15.
On the same day, the Hindustani flute maestro, Pandit Hariprasad
Chaurasia, will be at the REC and at the WCC the next day.
The 24-year-old SPICMACAY, a voluntary body, believes that the
programmes such as the Lec-Dem enable students understand the
classical art forms better, be they Hindustani music,
Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music.
