Students hold 'Candle Light Vigil'

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, OCT. 2. Hundreds of students and members of the Citizens' Forum on Tuesday held a ``Candle Light Vigil'' and stood hand in hand forming a ``human peace chain'' on M.G. Road here. The vigil was an expression of sympathy for the victims of the recent terrorist attacks in the U.S., and a statement of solidarity with the people of the West Asia and Afghanistan.

The human peace chain was formed in protest against the ``war- mongering'' of the U.S. and against all forms of violence. ``The world needs to avoid another bloodbath. The tragedy (in the U.S.) calls for `cool and calm' minds as expressed by Kofi Annan. What we need is peace and not a chain of terrorism and counter- terrorism; initiatives for dialogue, not war. We must respond to the crisis by working to eliminate all causes of terrorism and promote a just, peaceful and equitable world order,'' the participants said.

They said they were horrified and pained at the rhetoric of vengeance and rage along with the language of hate and war, that was emanating from the U.S. and other countries. ``We are of the firm conviction that retaliation and revenge can only lead to destruction of more innocent people and creation of more bin Ladens,'' they added.
