Bapu ghat to be developed on the lines of Rajghat

HYDERABAD, OCT. 2. Planting of saplings, singing of bhajans and
recitation of hymns from the Gita, the Bible and the Quran marked
the birth anniversary celebrations of the Father of the Nation,
Mahatma Gandhi, on Tuesday. The function, which was held at Bapu
Ghat, was attended by top dignitaries, besides hundreds of
schoolchildren and others.
The function commenced with the Governor, Dr. C. Rangarajan, his
wife, Dr. Haripriya Rangarajan and the Chief Minister, Mr. N.
Chandrababu Naidu, planting saplings. There was much goodwill and
bonhomie on display among the dignitaries present, many belonging
to rival political groups, during the event.
Children waved flags and placards and enthusiastically
participated in the proceedings despite incessant rain. The
bhajans, which included some of Bapu's favourites, were rendered
by Ms. Lalita and Haripriya, popularly known as `Hyderabad
Sisters'.
Among those who attended were Mr. K. Vijayrama Rao and Mr. C.
Krishna Yadav, Ministers, Dr. K. Laxman, Mr. Nagender and Mr.
Sripathi Rajeshwar, MLAs, Mr. M. Satyanarayana Rao, APCC
president, Mr. T. Krishna Reddy, HUDA Chairman, Mr. P.K. Mohanty,
Municipal Commissioner, Mr. Rajeshwar Tiwari, Collector,
Hyderabad, and Mr. Koteshwar Rao, former chairman, Disabled
Welfare department.
Later, speaking to newspersons, the Chief Minister recalled the
contribution of Mahatma Gandhi to the nation. He said that the
entire land around Bapu Ghat, on the banks of the Musi, would be
developed on the lines of Rajghat in Delhi and asked the
Municipal Commissioner to make concerted efforts to develop the
Bapu Ghat as a fitting memorial to Gandhiji.
Floral tributes

Floral tributes were paid to Mahatma Gandhi by several Congress
leaders at a function at the Congress Headquarters, Gandhi Bhavan
The APCC president, Mr. M. Satyanarayana Rao, garlanded the
portraits of Gandhiji and Lal Bahadur Shastri, former Prime
Minister, whose birthday was also celebrated today.
the APCC vice-presidents, Mr. G. Venkat Reddy, Mr. Mohammed Ali
Shabbir, general secretaries, Dr. D.L. Ravindra Reddy, Mr. K.R.
Amos, CLP deputy leader, Mr. D. Srinivas, and others were
present.
Earlier, the APCC president garlanded the statues of Mahatma
Gandhi on M.G. Road, on the State Assembly premises and at Bapu
Ghat near Langar Houz.
Shramdan
Shramdan was offered by the students and staff and inmates of the
Thakur Hari Prasad Institute of Research and Rehabilitation for
the Mentally Handicapped by cleaning the institute campus and
landscape. Prof. T. Revathy, Director-General of the institute,
paid tributes to the Mahatma.
