The Enron imbroglio
Sir, - Your Editorial `Muddying the quagmire' on the Enron
imbroglio (Sept. 27) brings to light the political mud-raking
that takes place over serious developmental projects. The
controversy poses hurdles in projecting India as a potential
destination for foreign investment.
The Centre as well as Maharashtra cannot renege on their
responsibility to provide a conducive environment for direct
investment, especially in the infrastructure sector.
What is needed now is a strong will on the part of the
Governments to clear the muddle through an amicable settlement,
rather than resorting to the usual delaying tactics such as a
judicial probe.
Further, the Government and the bureaucracy should take special
care while signing contracts with multinational corporations.
Moreover, care must be taken that this issue does not further
affect the prospects of India getting its due share of global
investment.
