Towards safer blood transfusion
By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, OCT. 2. The New Delhi-based Haemotech Inc. has
announced the launch in India of two systems for the collection
and management of blood which promise to alleviate two major
problems of blood supply in this country - shortage and safety.
The two products are the intellectual property of the U.S.-based
Haemonetics Corporation, world leaders in blood processing
technology.
The Haemonetics cell saver autologous blood recovery system
collects a patient's own blood during surgery, cleanses it and
recycles elements of the blood back to the patient before he
leaves the operating theatre. This blood salvaging process
reduces or eliminates the need for surgery patients to receive
blood drawn from others.
The MCS apheresis system permits the collection of
therapeutically useful quantities of blood components from a
donor. The rest of the blood is automatically returned to the
donor. Unlike traditional manual collection processes, the blood
collected through apheresis requires no further processing before
transfusion to a patient, making it an efficient and cost
effective procedure for blood centres.
