Minister lists steps to improve amenities in schools

HYDERABAD, OCT. 3. The School Education Minister, Mr. K. Srihari,
on Wednesday reiterated that the Government treated all children
in the 5 to 14 age group not going to school as child labour and
was initiating steps to enrol them in schools.
Inaugurating a one-day conference on `Provision of basic
amenities in Government schools and improvement in standards'
here, the Minister said, of the 44 lakh children in 5 to 14 age
group who were not going to school, 17 lakh had been enrolled.
The remaining 27 lakh children would be covered in a phased
manner, according to an official press release.
He said besides opening 7,500 new primary schools, 4,350 primary
schools were upgraded to high schools. In all, 21,000 new posts
of teachers were sanctioned, he added.
The Government had sanctioned Rs. 26.05 crores for school
education in Hyderabad for the current academic year. An amount
of Rs. 1.5 crores from this was for improving the basic amenities
in schools.
The Roads and Buildings Minister, Mr. K. Vijayarama Rao and the
Hyderabad District Collector, Mr. Rajeshwar Tiwari, spoke.
