Classic creations

Art can be expressed through many mediums — canvas, metal, plaster, glass, china, gold, silver and lesser metals. But cement... it is indeed an unusual medium. Artistic works in cement are a lasting luxury.Ethirajan and Co., situated on Anna Salai, near the Teynampet signal, is a 65-year old company that specialises in cement artefacts. Started before Independence, the founder is known for his innovative, artistic ideas. Graceful figures of dogs, children, flowers, fountains, gods and goddesses, and pedestals — all these were made to order, for big homes in the city.

The large gardens in such bungalows were decorated with cement figures, sometimes with a silver finish. A piece made from the outlet adorned MGR's Ramavaram home, while Sivaji Ganesan's house still sports the figure of a child with a book, on its fagade. However, the technique for making such statues is not available anymore today, and only tulsi maadams, lotus bases, plant holders and well rings are made.

A complex product that is entirely handmade is cement jaali that comes in lovely patterns. It often adorns compound walls, verandah walls or a window.

The steel framework is bent by hand, as per the pattern, and then cement is poured into the mould.

Costing about Rs. 55 per square foot, these frames definitely lend an artistic touch to any building, while providing a sturdy and airy barrier.

A 12-member team is involved in the production at Ethirajan and Co.
