New U.S. list likely today
By Sridhar Krishnaswami
WASHINGTON, OCT. 4. An indication of how serious the Bush
administration views terrorism in the context of the Indian sub-
continent, especially in relation to Jammu and Kashmir, could
come as early as tomorrow when the State Department is expected
to come out with its ``list'' of foreign terrorist organisations.
Separately and independently of the State Department's ``list,''
the White House is also working on expanding an earlier executive
order listing 27 organisations, entities and individuals directly
linked to the Saudi dissident, Osama bin Laden, and his Al-Qaeda
network.
In the last two weeks, senior political functionaries from India
have been trying to impress upon the administration the need to
take a larger perspective of the Al-Qaeda - its links with many
of the terror networks operating in Jammu and Kashmir and the
fact that they function with the official blessing and backing of
Pakistan.
