UAS to hand over land
By S.K.Ramoo
BANGALORE, OCT. 5. The Board of Regents of the University of
Agriculture Sciences here on Friday decided to allot 100 acres of
land in two plots on the campus of the varsity, for setting up a
biotechnology park.
Earlier, the board turned down the Government's request to hand
over land on the campus, and offered to allot land on
Yeshwanthpur-Yelahanka Road which, however, was not acceptable to
the Government.
A few days ago, a protest by UAS students against the move to
acquire land on their campus for establishing a biotechnology
park turned violent. Students and professors were injured when
police lathicharged them and lobbed tear-gas shells at them for
violating prohibitory orders imposed on the campus.
Following trouble on the campus, the Leaders of the Opposition
launched a tirade against the Government for its move to acquire
UAS land which is said to have several plant species crucial to
research.
The controversy over the proposal to establish a biotechnology
park on the UAS campus made the Government look for a new
location. It was said that there was a move to take over land at
Bommanahalli or on Mysore Road for the purpose.
