Youth accused of 15 thefts arrested

BANGALORE, OCT. 5. The Byatarayanapura police claimed to have solved 15 cases of house break-in and theft with the arrest of a 24-year-old youth. Gold ornaments and silver articles worth Rs. 6 lakhs have been recovered.

Police gave the name of the accused as Afaq Khan, a resident of Viveknagar. Khan, who hails from a respectable family, was in the habit was of visiting live-bands and spending money lavishly.

When his father refused to pay him money, Khan allegedly took to crime in 1998. He was jailed for stealing a motorcycle in 1998.

After his release from jail, Khan was absconding and committed 15 thefts in Byatarayanapura, J.P. Nagar and Banashankari police station limits in the City. Police are on the look-out for his accomplice. A team led by the Byatarayanapura Sub-Inspector, Mr. H.Narasaiah, arrested the accused.

Recovered: The Kalasipalya police recovered centering sheets and irons rods, and a lorry by arresting Liyaqath (18), Basheer (20), Habib (21), Jameel (20), and Kowsar (20).

The accused had stolen the sheets from Jayanagar and iron rods from a factory premises in Peenya, police said.

In another case, the Rajagopalnagar police arrested Dinesh (25) of Hegganahalli on charges of theft and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs. 15,000 which he had allegedly stolen from a house in Rajagopalnagar.

Bicycles recovered: The Sanjaynagar police recovered seven bicycles by arresting Prasad Murthy (21) of Amruthahalli. Murthy's accomplice in the theft is absconding.

Gangster held: The Jagjivan Ram Nagar police arrested the notorious gangster, Manjunath alias Toothu Manja (33) of Hanumanthanagar against whom there are more than 15 criminal cases.

Manja, who was detained under the Goonda Act and released recently, was arrested when he was allegedly extorting Rs. 50,000 from an auto consultant, Ramesh alias Bombay Ramesh in Manjunathnagar.

During interrogation, it came to light that Manja was making phone calls to businessman from jail and extorting money from them, police said.

Woman ends life: Geetha (22) committed suicide by hanging herself with a rope at her house at Rose Garden 6th Block in J.P. Nagar police station limits on Thursday evening.

Geetha's husband Ravindra, a coolie, used to harass her for dowry which made her to take the extreme step, police said.

Gang held: Vijayanagar police arrested a four-member gang which had robbed an executive of a private firm, Mr. Umesh, and attempted to murder him near Vijayanagar BMTC bus depot on July 13.

Investigations revealed that the arrested youth were hired by four employees of Mr. Umesh's firm to murder him. Ravi Kumar, Rangamadhe Gowda, Suresh, and Manjunath, who were Mr. Umesh's subordinates were nursing a grudge against him.

They had allegedly hired Manjunath, K.D. Venkatesh, Chetan, and Satish to eliminate Mr. Umesh. The gangsters were arrested on October 2 by the police, and a gold chain and lethal weapons were recovered from them.

Convicted: The City Sessions Court has sentenced Sreenivasa and Umesh, both 19 years of age, to seven years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs. 500 on each of them for attempting to murder Mr. Murthy of Venkatapura on June 12, 1999.

The Madiwala police had arrested Sreenivasa and Umesh and filed chargesheet against them.

Woman cheated: A woman, who gave Rs. 12,000 to a stranger when the latter pledged her ``jewellery'' with her later found that the ornaments were made of brass.

The victim, Ms. Asha A., was walking near her house in 2nd cross, 2nd Main on Wednesday when an unidentified woman approached her and offered to pledge the ``jewellery'' with her for Rs. 12,000. Ms. Asha who gave the money found after the stranger left her premises that the jewellery was made of brass not gold. The Vijayanagar police have booked a case and are on the look-out for the woman.

Chain snatched: A gold chain of Ms. Sumitra Rani, resident of Uttarhalli, was snatched by two men, who followed her from behind in Subramanyapura on Tuesday, police said.
