One more jewel in city's crown

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, OCT. 5. It's out finally. The Nizam's jewels will be permanently housed in the city only. The recent exhibition of the jewels in New Delhi was a roaring success, triggering demands for similar shows in other metropolitan cities.

The jewels would be on show in Hyderabad for two months from November 14 and extended, if necessary, by another month. The Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, is keen that the precious stones and ornaments should "stay where they belong" - in the city.

Informed sources said he made this clear to Mr. K.N. Srivatsav, Joint Secretary, Department of Culture, when the latter called on him on Thursday. The official was informed the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, and the Central Government had assured the Chief Minister that the jewels would be restored to Hyderabad.

Though Mr. Srivatsav said the jewels would be taken to Mumbai and Kolkata, he was told that they would have to `return' to the city only.

Mr. Naidu wanted the jewels to be showcased in a permanent exhibition at the Chow Mohalla Palace or any other suitable place, for which he assured all facilities, including security.
