Call for dialectical study of terrorism
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 5. Marxian dialectics must probe the
reasons behind the spurt in terrorism. Only such a study can find
a global solution to terrorism, the former Supreme Court Judge,
Mr. V.R. Krishna Iyer, has said.
Inaugurating a seminar on `Terrorism and imperialism' organised
by the AKG Study and Research Centre here this evening, Mr. Iyer
said there should be a dialectical study to trace the social,
political and communal reasons behind terrorism.
Finding a long-term solution to curb terrorism is not so easy.
The U.S., on the basis of the evidence it gathered, might attack
Afghanistan or capture Osama bin Laden. But those are short-term
measures, he said.
Mr. Iyer said the U.S. was following Napoleon's line of
acquiring money and power. All others are meaningless for them.
The United Nations in 1948 passed the universal declaration of
human rights which said that all citizens have the right to work
and a decent living. The U.S. diplomat, George Kennon, had said
in the same year that the country had 50 per cent of the world's
wealth and 6.3 per cent population. He had said that the real job
was to maintain this disparity. He wanted America to cease
thinking about sentimentalism, human rights, and democratisation.
It was imperialism which sowed the seeds of terrorism.
Taliban is the creation of imperialism. Now the terrorism which
has emerged from religious fanaticism is in clash with
imperialism. The imperialistic appetite of the U.S. had prompted
the country to provide arms and ammunition to Taliban to destroy
the former Soviet Union and Communism.
The U.S. aided Taliban to oust the former Afghan president,
Najibullah, who had strong Communist leanings. Afghanistan
witnessed a great social revolution under him. But America
ensured his ouster to annihilate the Soviet Union. Now Taliban is
misusing Islam to become a parallel power. Mr. Iyer said that
there should be a clear-cut line and policy to fight terrorism.
The CPI(M) central committee member, Mr. M.A. Baby, in his
presidential address said the terrorist attack on the World Trade
Center on September 11 has given a chance for the U.S. to justify
its imperialistic policies. Now the nation was trying to promote
its commercial interests under the guise of the attack, he said.
The CPI leader, Mr. P.K. Vasudevan Nair, said the Vajpayee
Government has shed the non-alignment policy and with over-
enthusiasm supported the U.S. fight against terrorism. India
should have had an independent policy instead of seeking the U.S.
aid to fight the terrorism in Kashmir, he said.
The `Desabhimani' general editor, Mr. K. Mohanan, welcomed. Dr.
Ninan Koshy, and the CPI(M) district secretary, Mr. M.
Satyanesan, also addressed the seminar.
