Double for Aparna, Suma, Rahul

KOZHIKODE, OCT. 7. Ayyappan Krishnan of Thiruvananthapuram and Aparna Balan of Kozhikode retained the under-16 singles titles in the S. Kumar's Kerala State sub-junior badminton championship at the V. K. Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium here on Sunday. Aparna also scored a double, as did her teammate M. Sruthi and Rahul Jayaram of Ernakulam, the singles champions in the under-13 section.

Ayyappan was too good for Arjun Prasad of Ernakulam in the under- 16 boys' singles final, winning 7-3, 7-1, 7-5 in 30 minutes. He was too quick, too powerful and had a lot more endurance as Arjun failed to put up a fight.

The under-16 girls' final also turned out to be rather one-sided, with Aparna downing Miral George of Thrissur 7-5, 7-5, 7-2. This is the second State singles title for the local lass, who had won the senior women's crown two weeks ago at the same venue.

She completed a double when she won the under-16 girls' doubles, joining hands with Suma Suresh. The duo beat Edwina Antony and Samjida Majeed of Ernakulam 7-5, 7-0, 7-4.

Sruthi thrashed teammate S. Sindhu 7-1, 7-0, 7-0 in the under-13 girls' single final. In the doubles final though, she partnered her victim to beat B. Dhany and B. Remya of Ernakulam 7-1, 7-2, 7-4.

Rahul Jayaram defeated Ram C. Vijay of Kozhikode 7-5, 7-1, 7-4 in the under-13 boys' singles final. Ram was also at the receiving end in the doubles final, along with Akhil M. Rasheed, going down to Rahul and Suraj, 6-8, 6-8, 1-7.

Under-13 singles (final): Rahul Jayaram (Ekm) bt Ram C. Vijay (Kzde) 7-5, 7-1, 7-4.
