Over 100 die as planes collide

MILAN, OCT. 8. Over 100 persons were killed in a runway collision at Milan's Linate airport early today between a Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) jet and a Cessna plane. A number of ground staff were believed to be among the victims.

The picture shows an airport worker removing the remains of the SAS airliner. All the 110 persons aboard the SAS flight 686 bound for Copenhagen were believed dead, as well as the four on the Cessna.

The SAS flight was approaching take-off speed when it hit the Cessna which had apparently taxied across its path. Visibility was hampered by heavy fog.
