First daylight attacks
Washington. Oct. 9. In continuing its air raids over Afghanistan for the third day in a row, the U.S. jets took to the skies in the morning itself on Tuesday. It was the first daylight raid on Afghanistan and the targets were military facilities that included airfields, airplanes, anti-aircraft and missile sites.

India not averse to talks with Pak.
New Delhi, Oct. 9. A day after the telephone call by the Pakistani President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, to the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, the debate within the Government to re-engage Islamabad in a dialogue is beginning to acquire momentum.

Khaleda takes oath as MP
Dhaka, Oct. 9. Begum Khaleda Zia, whose four-party alliance swept last week's parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, took oath of office as MP, a day before she is to be sworn in Prime Minister.

PM seeks Sonia's cooperation
New Delhi, Oct. 9. In an unusual development, the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, and the Leader of the Opposition and Congress President, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, had a meeting late this evening. It could not be confirmed who took the initiative, but the interaction is being described as an attempt by Mr. Vajpayee to evolve a consensus on India's response to the fast-changing geostrategic environment.

SC order on contempt
New Delhi, Oct. 9. In a significant judgment, the Supreme Court has held that an advocate punished for contempt of court cannot appear thereafter as a counsel in the courts, unless he purges himself of such contempt.

Nobel Physics
Stockholm, Oct. 9. Mr. Eric Cornell and Mr. Carl Wieman of the U.S. alongwith Mr. Wolfgang Ketterle of Germany today won the Nobel physics prize for 2001 for discoveries of principles governing the behaviour of matter.
