Simhachalam takes honours

VISAKHAPATNAM, OCT. 9. S. Simhachalam of South Central Railway, Secunderbad pipped K. Venkatesham, also from SCR, at the post to clinch the billiards title in the South Indian Masters billiards and snooker tournament conducted by the Literary Association of Town Hall, Kakinada, according to a report received here.

However, Venkatesham won the snooker title with a convincing five frames to two frames against K. Someswara Rao of LVR and Sons Club, Guntur, in the best-of-nine-frames final.

Simhachalam and Venkatesham were level at 3-3 in the best-of- seven (100 points up) frames billiards final on Sunday evening after an intense fight in the previous six frames. After Venkatesham scored 99 points and was one point away from victory, Simhachalam, on 83 points, kept his cool and with a brilliant display, notched up the required 17 points on the trot to clinch the issue. He received a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 while Venkatesham took a cheque of Rs. 3,000 and another for Rs. 500 for scoring the highest break of 85 points during the tournament.

Later Venkatesham received Rs. 7,000 for his efforts in the snooker event and runner-up K. Someswara Rao picked up Rs. 5,000. R. Loganathan of Chennai, winner of the event two years ago, lost in the semifinals this time but recorded the highest break of 80 points and received a cash prize of Rs. 1,000.

Each semifinalist and quarterfinalist in snooker event received Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,000 respectively while the cash awards for a semifinalist and a quarterfinalist in the billiards were Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 750 each.

Mr. S. Sudhakar, Deputy Transport Commissioner and Mr. T. Tata Rao, gave away the prizes. Mr. A. Subba Raju, president of the Town Hall, Mr. B.L. Somayajulu, tournament secretary, Mr. P. Sankar Rao, secretary of the Town Hall, participated.
