Jharkhand annual plan fixed at Rs.2,650 cr.

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, OCT. 10. The Annual Plan for Jharkhand for 2001-2002 was finalised at Rs.2,650 crores at a meeting here today between the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Mr. K.C. Pant, and the Jharkhand Chief Minister, Mr. Babulal Marandi. The Plan includes Rs.15 crores for strengthening infrastructure in the State capital.

During the discussions, Mr. Pant said fixing a realistic Plan size would help the State in the timely execution of development plans. He also appreciated the State for deciding to hold local body elections in November and taking steps towards development of backward areas. The State had already worked out a project for the development of some areas and had placed it before the World Bank for financial support. Jharkhand was asked to prepare similar projects for other areas and approach international funding agencies, he said.

On the negative side, Mr. Pant said Jharkhand had a high population growth and was lacking behind in education and health care. Promising all possible support for accelerated development, he said the foremost aim was to reduce the percentage of population below the poverty line and substantially increase per capita income. For this, the growth rate had to go up.
